SierraClub: Energy Oscars Recognize Wide Variety of Faith

The 2011 California Interfaith Power & Light Energy Oscar’s celebrated the green energy efforts of faith communities throughout the state of California. Among the recipients were, the Unitarian Universalist Church in Fresno who received an Energy Oscar for education that focused on raising energy awareness in their congregations. For energy efficiency, Trinity Church in Menlo Park and Green Cultch Farm Zen Center in Muir Beach both tied for their work in reducing their facility’s energy consumption and educating their communities. The Metropolitan Community Church in North Hollywood took the award for Advocacy, and First Presbyterian Church in San Bernardino won the green building category for installing a solar panel array and their involvement of the local community.

Other nominees included: for education, St. Paul’s Cathedral in San Diego and St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church in San Francisco; energy efficiency, Temple Judea in Tarzana and First Lutheran Church in San Diego; advocacy, Holy Family Parish in San Jose and Unitarian Universalist fellowship in Santa Cruz; green building, Our Lady of Guadeloupe in Hermosa Beach, Temple Sinai in Oakland, and First Unitarian Universalist Society in San Francisco.
