As we try to keep our homes cozy in these sub-zero temperatures, it’s the time of year when many of us crank up our thermostats and brace for higher utility bills. But there are many things we can all do to cut down on our use of electricity and gas, saving money and becoming more energy efficient. The new year is the perfect time to make a few changes.

While the expression “energy efficiency” may seem convoluted, it’s actually quite simple: Energy efficiency means taking steps to reduce our consumption of electricity and gas. There are simple steps we can all take, like covering drafty windows and using energy-saving light bulbs. Installing a programmable thermostat can help save an estimated 10 percent. We can also lower the temperature of our water heaters and install low-flow showerheads. Whether it’s a homeowner updating an old, inefficient furnace or a small-business owner adding insulation, energy efficiency benefits all of us.
