In his State of the Union speech last month, President Obama said, “But the debate is settled. Climate change is a fact. And when our children’s children look us in the eye and ask if we did all we could to leave them a safer, more stable world, with new sources of energy, I want us to be able to say, “Yes, we did.”
As a person of faith who believes that this world is God’s creation, and that we are called to care for it, I am encouraged to hear these words from President Obama. He has a key opportunity to act on his concern about climate change. With advice from Secretary of Stat, John Kerry, the president will decide whether or not to permit the Keystone XL pipeline to be built from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf Coast in Texas.
