Nevada County, Calif. February 5, 2014 – From now through the Valentine’s Day weekend of February 14-16, the Interfaith Committee of the Nevada County Climate Change Coalition (NC-CCC) along with multiple Nevada County faith groups and congregations, will take part in the nationwide Interfaith Power and Light Climate Change Preach-In. The Coalition invites local faith groups to consider ways to participate in the campaign. Suggestions include: a) Prayers for the earth during that weekend; b) Youth group activities to determine the carbon footprint of your house of worship or community (or an energy audit from the treasurer); and/or c) Valentines for the earth as a children’s class activity. (See www.preachin.org for details.)
Several local faith communities will take the first step, sending postcards and valentines to elected leaders. The children of participating congregations will show their love for the earth by thanking their representatives – and asking for laws that reduce the dangers of climate change.
Children and adults will send their own variations of this simple message: “As a person of faith, I believe we have a moral obligation to future generations to leave them a planet that is not polluted or damaged by climate change. I support America’s transition away from dirty energy sources to clean energy and a brighter future. I will do my part to protect climate for future generations. Can I count on you to do your part? We must act now if we are to have any hope of preserving the Earth’s bounty for future generations. In 2014, please support the EPA’s Carbon Pollution Standards for New and Existing Power Plants.”
