Interfaith Power & Light Communities Across the Nation Preach on Global Warming

Feb 12, 2015 | What's New

This Valentine’s weekend, faith communities of all religious traditions will participate in the 2015 National Preach-In on Global Warming and a new synchronized prayer for climate justice.

Sponsored by Interfaith Power & Light, a nonprofit that works as religious response to global warming, the Preach-In will reach more than one million people of faith and focus on the message of climate justice and loving God’s Creation. Houses of worship will preach or hold educational events that teach about the moral importance of global warming. Interfaith Power & Light provides sample sermons and prayers, bulletin inserts and postcards to send to senators urging real action to stem the effects of climate change.

“The Preach-In is our most popular event of the year, hands down,” said organizer Andree Duggan. “Over the past 5 years, we have reached over 6000 congregations and we are inspired by their creativity. Each year we hear from more and more people about how powerful this event is. We are excited because this year we’ll be adding a synchronized prayer for climate action on Valentine’s Day.”

The Valentine’s Day Climate Prayer is a brand-new event bringing together thousands people of all faiths to pray for climate healing. At noon local time on February 14th, people around the world will pause and take a moment to feel the power of prayer and to share their thoughts online as inspiration and encouragement for our work to protect Creation.

“There’s something very powerful about knowing that people across the country are praying about this issue at the same time,” said Interfaith Power & Light founder, The Rev. Canon Sally G. Bingham. “This will be an interfaith, nation-wide climate prayer reminding us to take seriously our responsibility to protect Creation.”

Ninety-percent of all major faith traditions are represented in this event and most have issued climate statements about the moral imperative to act as responsible stewards of the Earth.
