About the conversation
In preparation for Earth Day and in preview of a June 3 performance at the cathedral, learn about a fascinating musical project designed to engage our minds and hearts in the complex and dynamic data of climate change through the medium of music.
About the guests
Erik Walker has been writing and recording music for theater, dance, film and television in the Bay Area since 1982. His collaborations include experimental theater, dance, performance, film and rock bands. His latest album, Criteria Obsession, with his band Castle Canyon, is an entertaining romp through the instrumental rock landscape. It’s big in Europe, where they like that sort of thing. Erik holds a degree in composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He runs WackoWorld Music as well as the recording studio Crib Nebula in San Francisco. He teaches musicianship, improvisation, synthesizer madness and piano for all ages at his studio and at the Community Music Center in San Francisco.
Dr. Andrew Jones is Deputy Director of the Climate Readiness Institute and a research scientist in the Climate and Ecosystem Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he leads the Society and Integrated Earth Systems Program Domain. His research uses quantitative Earth system science tools – computer models, statistics, etc. – to gain insight into how humans affect the climate and vice versa. Dr. Jones is currently leading a project to examine how climate change will interact with urban heat islands in the Bay Area to alter the frequency of extreme heat events. He is delighted to be part of The Climate Music Project because he believes that it is ultimately the story behind the data that inspires action and drives decision-making. He is also an amateur musician. Dr. Jones holds a doctorate from the Energy and Resources Group at UC Berkeley.
